All About Flies

Why are there so many flies in my house?

There can be many reasons for a fly infestation in your house. Common causes include the presence of food waste, decaying organic matter, or standing water, which attract flies looking for breeding sites and food sources. Flies can also enter your home through open doors and windows or through gaps and cracks in the structure. Additionally, seasonal changes can lead to an increase in fly populations, especially during warmer months. Proper sanitation, sealing entry points, and removing potential breeding grounds are essential steps in reducing the number of flies in your home.

Do flies bite?

Yes, some types of flies do bite. For example, horse flies, deer flies, black flies, and stable flies are known to bite humans and animals to feed on their blood. These bites can be painful and may cause irritation, itching, and swelling. In some cases, bites from certain flies can also transmit diseases or cause allergic reactions. However, common house flies do not bite; they primarily feed on food, waste, and other decaying organic matter.

How quickly do flies multiply?

Flies can multiply very quickly under favorable conditions. For example, the common house fly (Musca domestica) has a rapid reproductive cycle. A female house fly can lay up to 150 eggs at a time, and these eggs hatch into larvae (maggots) within 24 hours. The larvae then go through several stages before pupating, which takes about 3-7 days. The pupal stage lasts another 3-6 days, after which adult flies emerge. This entire life cycle from egg to adult can be completed in as little as 7-10 days, allowing fly populations to grow rapidly in a short period.
